There are many considerations for designing a custom piece of furniture. You may want to design the whole thing, part of it or let us do it for you. Whatever the case, we are here to help and assist. Below are the topics we go through with each of our clients, to help ensure what we design is exactly what you're after.
Style & Inspo images – What's you style? Contemporary, country, coastal, Scandinavian, mid century or a combination? Pinterest, Instagram and home/design magazines are great places to start to source inspiration. Save and send these inspiration images over to DCS as this is a great starting point for us to understand the style of furniture you want us to make. As well as inspiration pictures of furniture, a few pictures of the space the piece of furniture will go into is also very helpful to the design process.
Sizing & Storage – Custom furniture means there are no limitations on standard sizes. We make to suit your requirements. Site measure ups are often required, especially for wall to wall installations. Storage within your home is precious and we like to make sure our pieces maximise storage where possible.
Materials – Timber furniture is our main game, however elements such as steel, MDF, melamine, brass, aluminium and epoxy resin all play a part in complementing timber furniture designs. As such, we are confident working with all of them too.
Budget – It's important to think about what your budget is for the piece you are wanting to have created. "The sky is the limit" they say. Well in reality budget usually plays a big part in the limits for your custom piece of furniture. We want to design and make the best possible piece we can to suit your budget. Knowing your budget upfront helps to ensure we meet your expectations in the piece we design and create. For example, we don't want to design you a $3,000 dining table when your budget is $8,000, as if that was your budget you'd be expecting a more complex and detailed design. This also goes for designing a $8,000 table when your budget is $3,000. Let us know what we're working with and we'll do our best to accomodate.
Making timber furniture is as easy as gluing pieces of timber together, a quick sand and some oil, right? HA! If only! I've learnt so much about timber over the past 8 years and whilst incredibly beautiful, it can be incredibly frustrating to work with. We are always learning and fine tuning our skills and methods. We've put a lot of time, effort and money into ensuring we have the skills and the right equipment to ensure our pieces are built to last.
Timber and steel are a beautiful contrast and also a very functional combination. We can do mild steel fabrication to accompany our timber joinery.
We don't offer aluminium or stainless fabrication (TIG welding) but if this is a requirement in your piece, we have contacts we can outsource that element too.
There are so many different mechanisms available to open, close, slide, push or drop. We work closely with our suppliers to keep up to date with the latest technology, giving you the best options to suit the functionality of your piece. This is also the same for handles and knobs. We can point you in the right direction and usually have samples around the workshop.
Yes, we work with live edge timber! Timber in its most natural form. We don't usually supply the live edge slab but we can put you in contact with our preferred suppliers.
All our metal work is powder coated, most of the time in black, however we can have metal painted in many other colours. This also goes for 2-Pac painting of MDF. We have trusted partners that provide an excellent finish.
We offer melamine cabinetry which gives our clients the option of timber or melamine internals for drawers and/or storage shelving.
We are big fans of finishing our pieces with Osmo All Natural and Hardwearing Waxes & Oils. We provide many finishing combinations in a matte, satin or gloss finish. We like Osmo as it is good for both humans and wood.
Osmo products are made from natural oils and waxes. The oil penetrates into the wood surface, protecting the wood from deep within. The waxes form an elastic, micro porous surface which protects the wood from moisture and abrasion. The wood remains naturally beautiful, protected and durable.
It looks amazing, it's non toxic, hardwearing and is very easy to maintain!
We supply all of our customers with an Osmo Spray Liquid Wax Maintenance Spray. This allows our clients to keep up the protection and blend any of life's dents/scratches that will naturally come to your piece of furniture over time.
Application is easy with a quick shake of the can and a light spray that is massaged into the piece of furniture. Make sure to finish your cleaning strokes with the grain for a seamless finish.
